Curbside Pickup and Delivery Begins June 15/Drop Boxes Open

The first phase of the WPL COVID-19 Recovery Plan begins Monday, June 15 with the start of curbside pickup and the resumption of the return of checked out materials at all branches.  Book drops will open to accept materials borrowed prior to our March 19 closure.

“Library staff has focused on implementing a contactless curbside pick-up and drop off plan which ensures the health and safety of customers and staff,” says WPL Board Chair, Councillor Rino Bortolin. “Staff began returning May 25 to prepare for our phased re-opening and are all anxious to see our customers and provide the public library service our community expects.”

To utilize our Curbside Service, simply place holds on materials in the same manner as always by accessing your library account on our website.  On receipt of notification that the order is ready, call 519-796-5119 or complete the online form found on our website.  A response will be forthcoming within one business day, at which time an appointment can be made for pickup.  When picking up and dropping off, customers are urged to maintain all social distancing protocols and follow staff direction.  All materials will be placed in secure plastic bags.   The telephone number and online form will be active June 15.

Customers with holds outstanding when we closed in March can make arrangements to pick them up curbside or schedule delivery.  All overdue and checked out materials should be returned by July 15, at which point fines will be reinstated for unreturned materials.

“Customers are asked to return checked out and overdue material to book drops where they will be stored in bins and quarantined for 72 hours before being officially checked back into the library system,” says WPL CEO Kitty Pope.  “With over 30,000 books and DVDs out in the community, we have been gearing up for their safe return and making them available for others to borrow.”

Once curbside service has been established, Windsor Public Library will trial Visit By Appointment, which will allow a limited number of customers in a branch, at any one time, to access materials, resources and public computers.  A detailed announcement on this will be made next month.

All branches will be operating on summer hours when curbside service begins June 15.  Summer Hours can be viewed on HERE.

Join WPL Board Chair, Councillor Rino Bortolin, Jennifer Escott, VP of Bike Windsor Essex and WPL staffer Len Hayward as they demonstrate curbside pick-up etiquette.

I have noticed that products that were in transit are now on hold at libraries. When will the items be allotted to patrons so they know what to pick up at the curbside?
Really looking forward to having this option as I am a regular library patron and have missed going to the library a lot.

    • Chris Woodrow says:

Good question Alison. If you currently have holds in our system, they will still be here for you. In the next few days you will receive notification that they are ready. At that time, please call 519-796-5119 or complete the online form found on our website. A response will be forthcoming within one business day, at which time an appointment can be made for your pickup.

  2. Alfred Scott says:

Sounds good. Eagerly awaiting the return of the libraries.

  3. Kevin Chau says:

Hi there, I’ve been trying to renew my Library Card online via Email with Library Card, Health Card and Mail with name and Home Address with photos, unfortunately, it seems not to work out very well.

    • Chris Woodrow says:

Send us an email here with the details and we will take care of it for you.

      • Kevin Chau says:

I’m having a problem here, Took pictures of my Library Card and Mail with Home Address via email, seems not to be sending on Outlook Email, if possible, can I wait till next week to renew it in person at the Library?

        • Jodie says:

No library cards were expired during this time, so please don’t panic about renewing your card. Once your holds become available and you reach out about an appointment for pick-up or delivery, the library representative can give you any information about updating an account. Account issues are not a service that will be available at time of pick-up or at a branch location.

    • Reg says:

On the library barcode section it says to enter the letter u or o, leave the letter(s) out and enter only the numbers. I had the same problem until I entered my number without the letter. It worked

  4. Jennifer says:

Hi Chris..just trying to nail down the process re existing holds previously advised.
Will another phone notice be generated? Or, do we simply advise our intention to
pick them up and make appointment with phone number noted? Thanks!

  5. Jennifer says:

Will holds previously notified but inaccessible to Covid policy be re-advised?
In other words..do we wait to hear again they are available or assume that they are
waiting for a curbside appointment without another advice?

    • Chris Woodrow says:

If you currently have holds in our system, they will still be here for you. To pick them up curbside, I would suggest you call 519-796-5119 or complete the online form found on our website. A response will be forthcoming within one business day, at which time an appointment can be made for your pickup.

  6. Cathy says:

Hi…will items picked up curbside have a return date of three weeks? Also will magazines be available? Thanks

    • Chris Woodrow says:

Yes Cathy, items picked up will have a three-week turn around. We are working on the magazine issue – stay tuned.

  7. Pat Gadoury says:

Will we be able to use text service on the phone to alert us of when items are ready for pick up? I don’t often look at my email. thank you

    • Chris Woodrow says:

Unfortunately as of now, notification is by email or phone call. We are investigating adding text as an option. Stay tuned!

  8. Eileen Girard says:

The library will accept returns of books taken out prior to March 19th…but what about books received through the bookmobile after the library closures

    • Chris Woodrow says:

All our book drops will be open Monday. Please feel free to drop off your materials when convenient.

  9. Don says:

Where would I drop my borrowed DVD ? Is there a bin outside ?
Or do I use the drop slot to return my DVD?

    • Chris Woodrow says:

All our book drops will be open Monday. Please feel free to drop off your DVDs at any location when convenient.

  10. Michele says:

I have a pickup appointment already scheduled for Wednesday. Now I was notified that some more books are ready. Will they automatically add those books to my pickup or do I need to make another appointment?

    • Chris Woodrow says:

Items are checked out one business day prior to your appointment. At that point, all items on your account are checked out and ready for you to pick up the next day. So no, you don’t need to make a new appointment! Whatever we have on hand for you Tuesday morning will be ready and waiting for you on Wednesday. Thanks!

  11. Nancy Kragl says:

Thank you , thank you, thank you for being back. I missed my Library and so grateful to be able to access the books again.

  12. Thomas says:

Happy to hear that the library will be open again. Our family has missed it.

I have a question about “holds”. I have two “holds” listed under my name. They have been there for a couple of months now. It currently states that the “holds” are only there until June 16. I am not sure if I will be able to pick them up that quickly though. I have filled out the online requirements for pickup but I am awaiting a response.

Will or can “holds” be extended?

  13. Kevin Chau says:

So glad to be open again! Questions about my holds, they have been at Chisholm for the past couple of months, have 17 DVDs on holds waiting to be picked up at Chisholm. I currently have 4 DVDs on hold that are currently scheduled to be picked up by tomorrow, will those holds be extended?

    • Chris Woodrow says:

No worries, your holds will be available until July 16. You should receive all of your holds when at Chisholm tomorrow.

      • Kevin Chau says:

Thanks for the heads up! Hope our staff are staying safe and healthy! Filled out the online form and awaiting for a response from Chisholm

  14. Gayle McAgy says:

Today, June 16, I received an email to let me know my holds are ready for p/u. I filled out the form for curbside p/u, but when I called to arrange a time I could not get through. I would like to receive the books. What to do?

    • Chris Woodrow says:

Apologies Gayle. Please keep trying. We’re 2 days into our curbside initiative and have been inundated with requests. Please hang in while we work to improve the process.

  15. Rose says:

I’m not really sure how to return my books. I just need to complete the online form and wait?

    • Chris Woodrow says:

Rose, if you want to return books and other materials, you can do so at any time. No need for an appointment. All of our dropboxes are open to accept returns. If you want to order materials, you would do so online, wait for notification they are ready – then you would need to register for pick up, either online or by calling 519-796-5119. I hope this helps.

  16. Helen says:

My library card was stolen along with my purse a few months ago. How do I proceed to get the items I have ordered? Thanks …

  17. Alison says:

It is great having Library items available I have been lost without it.Do you think this could have been done sooner like April or May?

I do think having a month to pick up items is overly generous as it means other patrons have to wait even longer for their items.

    • Chris Woodrow says:

Thanks for your question Alison. The Windsor Public Library Board closed all library locations in March and joined with the City of Windsor to combat the spread of Covid-19. The Provincial Government directed that public libraries should close. Toward the end of May, the province announced that libraries could open for curbside pick-up – which we did June 15. Please bear with us as we work through the curbside process.

  18. Dhrumin says:

Hi, i was waiting for June 15 for over 2 months now. Thankfully you guys started curbside pickup. I was really hoping to get a hard copy for a book but couldnt find it in catalog. The title is “Python Crash Course – 2nd Edition by Eric Matthes”

Do you think you guys would be able to get this book, maybe from other library(if our library dont have it) ?

  19. Kazi Atiqur Rahman says:

I have some books from March. Can renew them online?

  20. Kelly says:

I have holds and also placed another two books on hold. Can a whole package be put together? I tried to call but left a message and no one returned my call.

I have a book to return and wondered if the drop off is only available on Mondays

So sorry for the repetition o answering questions.

    • Chris Woodrow says:

Items are checked out one business day prior to your appointment. At that point, all items on your account are checked out and ready for you to pick up the next day. And yes, all our book drops are open 24/7 – so please visit whichever location is convenient.

  21. Thomas says:

Is there a way I can book a pickup time online, instead of having to bother someone to call me on the phone from the library?

I cannot find one here on the website.

    • Chris Woodrow says:

Unfortunately, at this time you cannot book a pick-up time but you can certainly discuss pick up times which are convenient to you when you are contacted by our customer support team.

  22. Kailee says:

I placed two books on hold and so far one has been ready for pick up for at least an hour but the second one is not ready yet. Why is that?
