I don’t have a lot of vivid memories from being five years old. Still images of parents, grandparents, and people whom I no longer even have the slightest idea about are largely what remains. Events that were highly formative took place, and yet I don’t necessarily recall the details. Yet, some things did stay with me. Birthday parties, visiting grandparents, aunts and uncles, and other events have stayed in my mind. My first concert for example is something I remember in great detail. It was at the then Cleary Auditorium and I remember the excitement of going to see Sharon, Lois, & Bram with my parents and brother.
The concert was a blast, and I still remember singing many of the songs along with everyone else in the audience. Obviously being a big fan of the show, I had a hoot and the memory of that evening has stayed with me. As the trio was such a big part of my formative years, like everyone I was saddened to hear about the death of Lois Lilienstein. The CBC wrote an excellent profile here (click here.)
Celebrating the life of such an important Canadian is made easier with the long list of releases the group put out. CD’s like Sharon, Lois & Bram’s Elephant Show Record, Elephant Party, and Skinnamarink TV can help us relive the wonderful experience offered by the group. Their records and books also make it possible for them to influence a new generation of kids, as people like me supply their music and energy to our youngest family members. While we are sad at the passing of such a legendary performer, it’s nice to able to appreciate the gifts she – and the rest of the group – gave us over the years. Thank you Lois Lilienstein, and thank you Sharon, Lois, & Bram.
