Eugene McNamara

Author, Poet, Instructor.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1930, Eugene McNamara was a prominent author, poet, and professor. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts (1953) and a Master of Arts (1955) from DePaul University, McNamara went to Northwestern University to obtain his PhD in English Literature (1964).

In 1959, McNamara began teaching at the University of Windsor’s Department of English. There, McNamara started the Windsor Review (previously known as the University of Windsor Review) in 1965, for which he was an editor until 1987. In recognition of the significant impact he made on the university, the University of Windsor’s Department of English established the Eugene McNamara Writing Scholarship in 2008, which is awarded each year to a student in the Creative Writing program.

McNamara’s works have been included in many anthologies, including Best Canadian Stories ^[4]. A driving force behind Windsor’s literacy scene, McNamara has received numerous awards, including the City of Windsor Mayor’s Award for Literary Excellence.

Some of McNamara’s works include Salt: Selected Stories (1975), Spectral Evidence (1985), Fox Trot (1994), Grace Notes: New and Selected Poems (2004), and The Orphan’s Waltz (2008). McNamara’s book entitled Irving’s Coat: Windsor’s Literary Renaissance (2006) describes the writing and literary scene in Windsor and Southern Ontario.

McNamara passed away on September 17, 2016.
