Born in Windsor, Ontario on August 22, 1924, Frances M. Gage was a well-known Canadian artist and sculptor. She worked in a variety of mediums, such as plaster, cast stone, wood, plastic, and terra cotta. Gage was also well-practiced in the use of various artistic techniques, including modeling, carving, and portraiture. Gage passed away in Cobourg, Ontario, on November 26, 2017.

Following her graduation from high school in Oshawa, Gage went on to serve with the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service. She then studied at the Ontario College of Art (previously known as the Ontario School of Art). Gage supported herself during her studies by making animal carvings out of wood. Gage received two scholarships and continued her education as an artist at the Art Students League of New York and the L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Gage’s sculptures are prominently featured in many locations across Canada, some of which include a memorial sculpture at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, a marble piece at the Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, and walnut reliefs at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. Gage has also received international acclaim, with her work being featured in numerous group exhibitions, such as at the International Congress of Medallic Arts in Florence, Italy.
