John Howie McGivney

John McGivney dedicated his life to volunteering in the Windsor Essex County community. He was the founder of the John McGivney Children Centre, which provides rehabilitation services to youth and children with special needs in Windsor Essex County. He was born in Manhattan, New York September 27, 1922. He practiced law in Toronto for many years before accepting the position of corporate lawyer with Chrysler Canada in Windsor in 1956.

John McGivney volunteered for more than 55 years in key roles in several notable community organisations including Rotary Club of Windsor, Windsor Police Commission, Windsor Chamber of Commerce, University of Windsor, St Mark’s by-the-Lake Church, Princess Anne School and the John McGivney Children’s Centre. He was awarded The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award in 2012 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to his community and Canada. McGivney died on May 8, 2014.

John McGivney also served in the Canadian Air Force as a pilot navigator in the Second World War, flying missions to Africa, Palestine, England, Italy, Arabia and Egypt.
