John W. Hanna
John W. Hanna was the 8th Mayor of Windsor, serving from 1910 to 1911.
During his time as Mayor of the City of Windsor from 1910 to 1911, Hanna was also elected as Vice President of the Ontario Union of Municipalities. In 1912, Hanna became ill and 
spent time in Hotel Dieu Hospital. Hanna’s final public appearance was before City Council on January 6th. Hanna passed away on February 14, 1912, and Windsor mourned widely at news of his death. Attendees of his funeral included members of the Essex Bar Association and the Board of Education, as well as the Mayor of Detroit. City schools and businesses closed on the day of the funeral in his honour.
Hanna was born in 1860 in the County of Leeds, Ontario. He studied in Athens, Ontario and Cobourg before taking up a career as a teacher. Furthering his education, Hanna studied law at Osgood Hall. During this time, he was a clerk with Cameron, McMarshall, and Hoskins in Toronto, a position that he held for two years. Hanna continued his career in law after moving to Windsor in 1884. He held a position with the law firm of Cameron, Cleary, and Hanna. In 1891, Hanna set up his own legal practice, Cowan and Hanna. In 1890, Hanna married Jennie Bothwell and had two children named Elwood and Delmer.
