Join Windsor Public Library March 29 and 30 to celebrate the sunflower and discover why it has become a symbol for peace, hope and solidarity for the people of Ukraine.
Now, more than ever, as the conflict in Ukraine continues and daily news reports bring horrific stories and shocking video footage of events in that country, we are all following events with disbelief – particularly the 10,000 residents of Windsor and Essex County who claim Ukrainian heritage.
Today and tomorrow, at all Windsor Public Library branches, PROJECT SUFLOWER will feature information displays on the national flower of Ukraine, the history of Ukraine, Take and Make Kits focusing on the nation of 44 million people and virtual story times with a sunflower theme. And yes, all branches will have potted sunflower displays – and with partner Shine Bright YQG staff will be handing out sunflower seeds, free of charge, to customers – while quantities last.
“WPL will do all we can to support Ukraine”, says WPL CEO Kitty Pope. “British Artist Martin Firrell stated that ‘the road to freedom is bordered with sunflowers’ and I am hopeful that the joy, happiness and independence represented by sunflowers, returns to Ukraine as soon as possible.”
What can we do to help Ukraine? The City of Windsor has compiled a list of organizations soliciting donations to support families in Ukraine. The City of Windsor and Windsor Public Library are not affiliated with any of the listed groups and those wanting to help should contact the organizations directly.
