Ritchie Hawtin

Born June 4, 1970 in Banbury, England, Ritchie Hawtin lived there till he was nine years old. When his family immigrated to Canada, they settled in La Salle, a town outside of Ritchie HawtinWindsor, Ontario. He has one brother, Matthew, who is a successful visual artist and ambient music DJ. As a teenager Hawtin found from a combination of techno with computers science fiction. He began to DJ in clubs in Detroit at age 17, and his early style was a mix of techno and house music. By the 1990’s he had already established his reputation for innovative shows and regularly performed abroad.

As a recording artist, producer, remixer, live performer and DJ, his productions are recorded in Windsor and released on his now legendary Plus 8 & Minus record labels.  On vinyl it was Hawtin’s recording moniker of PLASTIKMAN that put him in the limelight. Worldwide he achieved success with a mix of techno and ambient sounds, and is considered one of the innovators of Detroit Techno and Minimal Techno. In 2006, he collaborated with choreographer Enzo Cosimi on a composition called “9.20” for the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Torino. Hawtin said, “Enzo and I are very much interested in pushing boundaries, both as artists and for our audiences. Working together for the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Games delivers the creative endeavor to not only entertain a huge audience, but to also introduce them to sights and sounds that they may have never experienced before.”

With over of 30 years of DJ experience, Hawtin has headlined some of the most prestigious arts and music festivals to date and continues to define rather than follow musical trends. Internationally in demand, his fan base is thriving and worldwide. His DJ reputation has earned him many Best International DJ awards with fans and the music industry. Not content with technology of today, Hawtin has a unique vision in developing creative options for musicians to create and perform electronic music with, most notably with early involvement in the Scratch DJ system. His devotion to detail and desire to push the electronic arts in the studio and on the stage continues to be his motivation and has been rewarded with an honorary PHD

Today, in between touring the globe and being Canada’s electronic music ambassador, he spends time in his studios in Windsor and Berlin, Germany.
