One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, on December 4 1894, Windsor Public Library first opened at Lambie’s Hall. Library users who paid five cents for a library card could select from among 5,254 books and 60 periodicals. Lambie’s Hall remained the Windsor Public Library for almost seven years, until the Carnegie Library opened in 1903. The site on Ferry Street letter became the location of the Windsor Star building and is now home to the University of Windsor’s School of Social Work.
In celebration of our anniversary, all WPL locations will feature displays depicting the history of the library system, including photographs, newspapers and other unique items from Windsor’s Community Archive. Additionally, all locations will have customer appreciation events organized in conjunction with the Fines Amnesty.
On a daily basis, for the balance of December, all of our communications platforms will feature photographs from the local history collection and from the community archive.
