Travels with FRED

If you haven’t had a chance to explore Windsor Public Library’s coolest new branch, you’re missing something.  Our bookmobile, lovingly called FRED (for Freedom to Read, Educate and Discover) has been on the road for a few months now, bringing what the library has to offer to seniors’ facilities, community events, or under-serviced neighbourhoods. Working on FRED is a unique experience.  People aren’t sure at first what we are, or if they are allowed to just climb aboard.  Rest assured, you are! Kids are “wowed” when they step Continue Reading...

Conceptual Drawings For John Muir Public Library Approved

The JOHN MUIR branch will be the newest in the Windsor Public Library system when it opens in April 2018. Plans call for the 3,800 sq. ft. branch to be housed in the renovated old Sandwich Fire Hall on Mill Street. Architect Jason Grossi of studio g+G inc. has developed conceptual drawings for the $2,5 million renovation project which balance WPL needs with the space limitations of the location. The plans recognize the need for a functional library in the 21st. century, providing space for customers, technology and Continue Reading...

A Number of Things: stories of Canada told through fifty objects

Beloved Canadian author Jane Urquhart was honoured with the task of putting together a lyrical non-fiction collection of short stories to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, told through fifty objects. Each object is rich in Canadian history. Whether it be about our iconic explorers and leaders, or personal anecdotes from her family’s past, Jane beautifully intertwines the tales of each object to speak to us as a nation. Each object is also masterfully illustrated in black and white linear carvings on scratch-board by Scott McKowen, Continue Reading...

Help Grant Llama Llama Author’s Final Request

Yesterday, I was saddened to hear of Llama llama author Anna Dewdney‘s recent passing; she died of cancer on Saturday, September 3rd at the age of 50. While her death represents a real loss to the world of children’s literature, for me, it was Dewdney’s final request that I found most moving. She asked that, in lieu of a funeral, people celebrate her life by reading a book to a child. Prior to becoming a children’s author Dewdney had worked as a daycare provider and was a strong Continue Reading...

Step Right Up for the ‘How-To’ Festival 2016

Windsor Public Library is excited to once again host our ‘How-To Festival’! On Saturday, September 10 from 11am-3pm, the public is invited to stop by to learn some fun and interesting skills in just 10 minutes or less.  We had so much fun at last year’s festival at Budimir Library that we’ve decided to expand the event to two locations – Budimir and Central Libraries, and almost 30 experts! We have a great roster which includes some favorites from last year and some exciting new additions Continue Reading...

Windsor Public Library Welcomes Syrian Teens

One of my favourite parts of my job is introducing new people to library services. I love being able to show people the very exciting resources that are available for free to anyone with a library card which is also free to any resident of Essex County. I feel like Santa Claus listing off all of the free resources, particularly when people erroneously think there are charges for programs, cards, or borrowing materials and I get to give them the good news: they get tons of value Continue Reading...

Library Gears Up For Expanded Outreach Opportunities

Much like the recent reincarnation of 1970s muscle cars, their present day nameplates have very little in common with their predecessors. Likewise, bookmobiles from the same era bear no similarity with versions seen on the road today. They are bristling with the latest technology, innovative library programming and serve as community WIFI hubs. With the recent purchase of a customized GMC vehicle, Windsorites have the opportunity and freedom to read, educate and discover what Windsor Public Library has to offer…wherever you live in the community. Costing Continue Reading...

New Sandwich Towne Library to Honour John Muir

The new Windsor Public Library branch in Sandwich Towne will be known as the JOHN MUIR PUBLIC LIBRARY.  Both City Council and the Windsor Public Library Board voted unanimously to bestow the honour on Mr. Muir, a consummate volunteer and library supporter who not only gives of his own time but, more importantly, has inspired others to become involved in the revitalization of Sandwich Towne. Plans call for the 3,800 sq. ft. branch to be housed in the renovated old Sandwich Fire Hall on Mill Street. The Continue Reading...

Library Hubs Meeting Community Needs project seeking feedback

Earlier this year, the Windsor Public Library was thrilled to receive a grant from the Ontario Libraries Capacity Fund to develop a community hub of social services for those experiencing homelessness or living in poverty.  The goal of the Library Hubs Meeting Community Needs (LHMCN) project is to create an information service delivery model within library systems that will improve access to social services and work to ensure that all are welcome in our libraries. This project is being done in partnership with Guelph Public Library and Essex Continue Reading...
