WPL Celebrates 125 Years

This photo shows the Carnegie Library, which many Windsorites remember fondly. It opened in October 1903 at the corner of Park and Victoria Streets. In 1901 City Council sought a grant from Andrew Carnegie to replace the library at Lambie’s Hall, which was no longer large enough to meet the community’s needs.

On December 4 1894, Windsor Public Library first opened at Lambie’s Hall. Library users who paid five cents for a library card could select from among 5,254 books and 60 periodicals. Lambie’s Hall remained the Windsor Public Library for almost seven years, until the Carnegie Library opened in 1903.

One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, on December 4 1894, Windsor Public Library first opened at Lambie’s Hall. Library users who paid five cents for a library card could select from among 5,254 books and 60 periodicals. Lambie’s Hall remained the Windsor Public Library for almost seven years, until the Carnegie Library opened in 1903. Flags of Remembrance Plaques at Central Branch

The news that several plaques honouring Canadian veterans had been stolen from a Riverside Drive memorial was heartbreaking. The plaques and Canadian flags were installed by the Veterans Voices of Canada as part of their National Flags of Remembrance project.
